How or where can i find the best advise about make-up or can you help me :(?

I’m 20 years old and i’ve only just started to wear make-up. I have not worn make-up because i have very bad acne and skin so i could not apply foundation without it looking terrible-the foundation wouldn’t hide the spots and the marks and where i had dry skin where the spots were healing the foundation would make the dry skin look like i got some sort of flesh coloured fungi growing on my skin.. that’s basically what it looked like :’( BUT i went to the doctors and she gave me this solution in a glass bottle to apply twice a day or as much or as less i need to, i don’t apply it in the mornings before i put on my (now that i’ve got foundation i just cannot not go out without it now even though it doesn’t look perfect) foundation because it then starts to flake a bit and looks like i got dry skin so i use L’Oreal cleanser with the circular rubber scrubber which feels very nice on the skin but it’s not hard enough to take off the dry skin, so please IGNORE the fact i have acne as the solution i got from the doctors almost COMPLETLY gets rid of them but it’s taking quite a long while to work :( which is a pain as i need it to work noooow as i need to get on with my life, i hardly leave the house because of my bad skin and my lack of knowledge of make-up.

I have brought a whole series of magazines called Essential Guide to Beauty which was all about make-up and hair etc. but i could not make any sense of them and the make-up that came free with them looked good but i’ve tried them out and i’m not sure if they are of good enough quality : / so i’m not going to bother with it all which is a shame as i’ve got a whole make-up bag full of it, i’m going to buy make-up from stores so i know it’ll be reusable quietly.

I know hardly anything about make-up so i’ve guessed at what i need. I have brought No7 Stay Perfect Liquid Foundation, 2True black eye shadow, Maybelline Kohl Express eyeliner and Maybelline Falsies mascara.
I only brought the Maybelline eyeliner because the advert for the mascara said “want this look also get Myabelline Kohl eyeliner” or something along those lines : / so i did and i can’t get the same look as the model on the advert.. pfft i fell for that one then didn’t i.
When i went into Superdrug (which is not a pharmacy, it sells make-up and loads of other things i girl needs) and i looked around and i saw one of those free standing turning 2True make-up shelves and in between the shelves were pictures of models wearing make-up and telling you what make-up they are wearing and i really liked the smoky eye one so i looked up the eye shadow and brought it BUT when i apply it feels too loose, when i put it onto my lid and i start to spread it i’ve taken almost all of it off and it spreads onto the rest of my face and looks very messy :( son i don’t use it any more.
I brought the mascara because it said it makes you look like you’ve got false eyelashes, i knew it wouldn’t look anything like the advert but i brought it anyway and it does separate my lashes-i’ve got quite long eyelashes so it make my lashes look good but i think mascara is mascara none are really very different from each other, i think it just depends on the brush that comes with them.
I got the foundation about… 3 years ago as i wanted to look good for my cousin’s wedding but i brought it in a bit of a rush and i asked one of the ladies for help at getting the right colour, the colour looks okay but i think i need a lighter one- one that’s not too much of a fleshy-colour and the foundation doesn’t come in a lighter colour, so i did not wear any make-up for the wedding which was a shame :( as i looked ugly.

All that’s above is what i wear at the moment, as it doesn’t look perfect like most other girl’s make-up i don’t go out often where people can get a good look at my face.
All i want is to look like any other girl of my age! and to have a life, i don’t have a job because i don’t have the confidence and i have not seen my mates for about a year because i just don’t feel sexy and pretty i just want to curl up and hide away.
I really need urgent advise, i’ve tried looking for advise on the internet and on here, Yahoo Answers any everyone is saying different things and mentioning make-up and brands that i’ve never heard of and may not even be able to buy it on England which is where i’m from :( (

I am so sorry to hear of your troubles. I can only imagine what it’s like to deal with acne and the toll it takes on your confidence.

First I want to tell you to THROW AWAY YOUR CLEANSER !! what ever good you are doing with your treatment you are about to ruin it with this cleanser. It’s harsh and it’s going to make your skin drier.
Now I know you are not asking for skincare advice but it’s hard to give makeup advice without talking about the other. In order for your makeup to look good.. you need a good foundation ( which is your skin) Make sure you are using a good moisturizer ( I suggest kiehls, it’s gentle and effective )

Now get a good primer, this will help even out the surface and help your makeup glide on. To start try the Loreal primer or Rimmel ( there are better ones but this is a good place to start )
If your foundation really is 3 years old.. throw it away.. it’s full of bacteria and could contribute to your acne. Try Revlon ColorStay makeup or I would even suggest a better choice would be CLINIQUE ( they have very nice makeup for problem skin so it won’t irritate it )
Now as far as eyeshadow all you need is a primer. Try Loreal EYEprimer, this will help with the staying power and it won’t slide. ( all of these are available in England )

Now the key to makeup is practicing.. the more you practice the more comfortable you will be..
Check out you tube.. there are thousands of tutorials that will show you how to do your makeup.
A Uk favorite is Lauren Luke.. http://www.youtube.com/user/panacea81

I wish you the most luck and may I remind you.. beauty is from within, if you feel so down maybe you might want to talk to a counselor.. I wish you lots of luck !!

Ps: igreentea.. Bare Minerals,Bare Essentials and Rare Minerals are the same company. Bare Essentials is the company name and their line of mineral makeup is BARE MINERALS, their skincare line is RARE MINERALS. Your advice is fantastic.. please check your facts to avoid confusion.

I would really love to help but I don’t have an extensive knowledge about the brands in England. But I’ll recommend some of my favorite products and hopefully you have it over there.

First off, for acne prone skin, you need an effective skin regime that will combat your acne. The steps you should be taking is: cleanse/exfoliate, tone, moisturize. Moisturizing is essential here. Typically, people with acne use products that are designed to dry out the skin to remove the pimples and etc. However, those products severely dry out the skin which sometimes has a negative effect because your skin will sense the decrease in essential oils that it needs to keep the skin hydrated and healthy thus it’ll create excess oil to replenish your skin. These excess oils can potentially clog your pores and make you break out even worse. So moisturize moisturize. I would recommend Neutrogena’s line of facial moisturizers. It has a very light-weight formula that goes on without being sticky or harsh on your skin. They have one for acne prone skin as well as sensitive skin. It’s fragrance-free and oil-free so it won’t clog your pores.

I would also recommend a different cleanser mainly because L’Oreal’s cleansers typically have harsh chemicals in it. I recommend going for a more gentle cleanser that exfoliates as well so you can cleanse and exfoliate at the same time. Nothing comes to mind for this at the moment but a good exfoliater that I’ve used in the past was St. Ive’s Apricot Scrub.

For mascara, you don’t need anything too dramatic. You can try Covergirl’s Lash Blast which will give you dramatic looking lashes but personally, I like the more natural softer looking lashes. I would recommend trying Maybelline’s Full ‘N Soft mascara. It’ll leave you with fuller and softer looking lashes.

You don’t need eyeshadow. You don’t need to look like those models at all. You can apply a little for a special occasion if you like but don’t pressure yourself into thinking you need to look like those high-class models with their layers of makeup. Looking natural will boost your self-esteem. If you want to use eyeshadows, I would probably recommend MAC’s, L’Oreal’s, Urban Decay’s and Coastal Scent’s eyeshadows. Those are probably the best high quality eye shadows you can find. As for eyeliner, I would recommend trying a liquid eyeliner but if you’re not use to applying eyeliner yet, practice with a pencil eyeliner first. Normally, I would recommend a gel eyeliner mainly because it doesn’t smear or smudge like pencil or liquid eyeliners but I want you to be comfortable with applying just normal eyeliner before you start gel eyeliners. For pencil eyeliners, I would recommend Maybelline and Covergirl’s pencil eyeliners. They are self-sharpening and have a smudger on the other side that will help if you make a mistake.
